Healthy and happy Livestock Guardian Dogs from caring, responsible breeders always work better than those who are sickly, poor in health, malnourished, frightened and uncared for. Sadly, there are many neglected and abused LGDs out there. Don't let yours be one of them. And don't promote or stick up for those who abuse their LGDs.
LGDs are not "just" tools, like a hammer or saw. They are not "just" anything. They are phenomenal dogs, with above average intelligence - often smarter than their own owners! - and good ones are born with an innate nurturing ability. LGDs are special, tough, protective dogs who deserve your utmost respect and care. Treat them well and they will return your love with devoted guardianship.
Help stamp out LGD abuse by not buying from questionable, flaky, dishonest or poor breeders. Don't perpetuate non-handling and socializing of your working LGD - don't buy from breeders who raise their dogs "hands off".
Open your eyes…learn to discern quality from junk, and you'll be glad you did in the end. Remember not to stress your dogs and run enough of them to do the job right. Your stock deserves it, and so do the dogs. Do or do not…there is no try.
